I've just added new photos of some of my latest "little box" assemblages here.

Big news...if you are an artist living here in the Portland, OR area, the application process has just opened up for the Glean Program once again. They are looking for five artists who are willing to glean for materials for five months at the Metro Transfer Station (the city dump). They'll pay each artist a $2,000 stipend, plus you'll have a group show (earning 80% of your sales) in August. Each artist is required to create at least ten pieces for this residency. You can find more information (as well as download the application-due at the end of this month) here. You can also read all the information (with photos) that was blogged by the artists from the last two seasons here. You can also search here on my blog for photos and information about my own personal experience in 2012. I thoroughly enjoyed this project two summers ago...the city dump is a "treasure trove" for artists! If you live in an area of the country (or world) that might be interested in starting such a program for artists, you can contact Amy Wilson, local program director, for more specific information at nowaste@comcast.net
As I blogged earlier, my neighborhood (two blocks from my house) is undergoing some major transformation. A new line of the city's MAX commuter train is being put in place, much of it having to be elevated in the area where I live. It promises to be complete by Sept., 2015, so there are several months yet to go. I've been out with my camera trying to document some of the very latest ongoing progress:
Newest work added February 8, 2014 Newest work added January 12, 2014 I've noticed that because of the limitation of size of this new assemblage series (each piece being constructed in a small cardboard box...5 x 4 x 1 "), there are some unique problem solving challenges to always address. By the way, these cardboard boxes are the kind that cheap jewelry might come in (with the piece of white cotton inside)...I got a huge case of these at some yard sale a few years ago, and am just now putting them to use. They are remarkably sturdy especially after I've "worked" them with glue, papers, objects and glass. Newest work added-January 3, 2014 January 1, 2014 Happy 2014 ! I'm celebrating the new year with some new assemblage work. I've been concentrating on smaller pieces, all of them constructed in small cardboard boxes approximately 5 x 4 x 1 inch. I've been combining my collection of vintage photos with the other kinds of "objects" that I've been gathering for various projects-much of the detritus still coming from my art residency a couple summers ago while working at the city dump. As usual, I've again been using glass to cover (and enshrine) each of my pieces. As is always the case, the glass adds a dimension of difficulty when it comes time to photograph each piece. Here are a few of the new pieces...I'll continue to add to this collection as I get more work completed and photographed:
Boys Fort, an artisan type store in downtown Portland, is having their second annual Box Show, running through the end of this week. I just happened to wander in at noon today while in the area, and discovered the show, which consists of the work of some forty local artists. The boxes were apparently auctioned off last week (what a great way to get people into your store!). I was not aware of this show-didn't have anything included, etc., but hope to be a part of it all next year (yes, I did have a quick talk with the manager). I asked to take a few photos of some of this year's boxes...there were a few of them that were real standouts, some of the others-not so much. Have a look: Boys Fort is located at 902 SW Morrison (corner of 9th and Morrison) in downtown Portland.
It's that time of the year again...Miami Art Basel, the massive international art show at Miami Beach (and all over the Miami area). I'm here in Portland (where the winter temps are now in the 20's), and will NOT be enjoying the warmth and art of Miami Beach this year (check out my Art Basel blog from a couple years ago HERE), but I've been checking out the online website (online catalog) just to see which galleries and artists from around the world are represented this year. I just made an interesting "artist discovery" while perusing the online catalog...it appears that a gallery from NYC is apparently selling some work by the "outsider" artist, James Edward Deeds: (I'm really curious as to what the price of this two-page piece would cost at Miami Basel) Deeds lived, for whatever reasons, in the "State Hospital No. 3" (also referred to then as the "State Lunatic Asylum, No. 3") in Nevada (early to mid 1900's) for several decades, and managed to create several pencil/crayon/pen and ink drawings (about 140 of them) on the official hospital paper. A much more complete story of his life and work can be found HERE. His story (and work) is quite intriguing to say the least. A few other examples of his work: A few of my favorite pieces that I've seen at Miami Basel the last two times I've visited: If you live in the Portland area, you might want to check out the window display at PDX Contemporary Art (925 NW Flanders). Bill Dean, assemblage artist, has the entire window for several of his "vintage" (and whimsical) assemblage pieces. I think they will be on display for the entire month of November. I took a few photos while visiting the window this afternoon...not the best photos, unfortunately, with all the reflection from the glass: Bill and I were in a group show two years ago at the Annie Meyer Art Gallery, and will be meeting once again for a "two man assemblage show" next October at Gallery 6 PDX...more on that later!
Yes, folks, more shameless self promotion! I am shipping another box of assemblage and collage work to my gallery in New York City in the next day or two. It should be available sometime next week. If you live in the area, stop in and see Seth and Kristin at the Cog and Pearl Gallery, 190 5th Av., Brooklyn, NY 11217. I've been able to visit their gallery twice, and am always quite impressed with the collections of work that they offer for sale from both local artists and others from around the country.
This collage and assemblage work will soon be at their gallery: Gracie (mini labradoodle) met her match this afternoon, getting to play with the new neighborhood puppy, Henry, a twelve week old cocker spaniel. Gracie is now six months old, and loves meeting other people and dogs. I was able to capture a bit of the play session that she had with Henry today...the joy of watching two puppies PLAY! Moles |
