Special thanks to Pammela Springfield for this little piece of history!
I'm now the owner of this amazing little box...a "guest pac" ...a piece of history from the 1940's-50's. Apparently these were the common amenities for travelers staying at hotels (just as we get the miniature soaps, shampoos, and conditioners today). I'm wondering if this box might have been designed for the male traveler because of the hair tonic. There must have been something similar for ladies. As you can see, this box (from The Brunswick Hotel, Idaho) has been virtually untouched...nothing opened and used. Included in this kit: 1. Kleenex Eyeglass Tissues 2. Pepsodent toothpaste 3. Vaseline Hair Tonic 4.Ambrosia Facial Cleanser 5. Bromo-seltzer 6. Tums 7. Sayman Vegetable Wonder Soap 8. Deodorant I've been looking online to see if there are other photos of similar kits and found this: Special thanks to Pammela Springfield for this little piece of history!

I had a first time meeting with a local assemblage artist the other day at a Starbucks in Portland. Artist, Shelly Caldwell, has an amazing new body of assemblage work that she's showing at the Guardino Gallery this month (December 2012). Her work (from mostly recycled kinds of materials) is filled with all kinds of wonderful incongruity and exaggeration. We had a great chat about the directions that we are each going with our own assemblage work! Shelley is one of those artists who would work well with the Glean Program...the recycling program that sends local artists to the Metro Transfer Station (the city dump) to look for "trash," and then create art (check out my first "gleaning from the dump" blog here). By the way, new applications are being accepted now (this month only) for five new artists to begin the third residency for this program....application process here. I was able to take a couple photos of her work while at the Guardino Gallery in early December. I think this is one show you'll want to see!
