It's that time of the year again...Miami Art Basel, the massive international art show at Miami Beach (and all over the Miami area). I'm here in Portland (where the winter temps are now in the 20's), and will NOT be enjoying the warmth and art of Miami Beach this year (check out my Art Basel blog from a couple years ago HERE), but I've been checking out the online website (online catalog) just to see which galleries and artists from around the world are represented this year. I just made an interesting "artist discovery" while perusing the online catalog...it appears that a gallery from NYC is apparently selling some work by the "outsider" artist, James Edward Deeds:

Deeds lived, for whatever reasons, in the "State Hospital No. 3" (also referred to then as the "State Lunatic Asylum, No. 3") in Nevada (early to mid 1900's) for several decades, and managed to create several pencil/crayon/pen and ink drawings (about 140 of them) on the official hospital paper. A much more complete story of his life and work can be found HERE. His story (and work) is quite intriguing to say the least.
