One of my discoveries this past weekend was this vintage wooden commode. I’m not exactly sure how “vintage” it is, but it was quite interesting, very well constructed, and certainly worthy of a closer look. I didn’t take it for myself, but I talked one of the other gleaners (someone who works for St. Vincent de Paul) into taking it back to his trailer to eventually be sold in one of their thrift shops. It just could end up as a nice little conversation piece in someone’s living room (but not mine). After doing a quick online search, I've noticed that there are other similar commodes for sale:

Even though there are five artists involved in this grant of gleaning for art materials at the city dump, we generally don't run into each other while working in the bay. It's truly a NICE surprise when someone else does show up which happened this past Friday morning. Sarah and I were able to dig together for three hours for things that we could use in our creations. She had found her motherlode just as I was entering the bay area...a large bag of crocheted (knitted?) items. We've been helping her to collect these kinds of items for the past weeks, but this was a huge find with all of these pieces soon to be finding there way into one of her "soft sculptures." I'm eager to see the finished piece in Sept.
The last two days of digging through mountains of trash have been eventful. I'm enjoying the Friday and Saturday routine, but am going to throw in more Thursdays. A couple of the other artists seem to show up mainly on Sunday, so I think I'm going to schedule some time with them, just so that we can glean together, and get to know each other a bit more. My big treasure finds yesterday (just as I was about to leave) were these old newspapers (in near perfect condition, having been stored in sealed, taped boxes...at least, that's how I found them): I haven't decided how (or if) I'm going to use these papers. At the moment, I'm most excited about the "funnies" from 1959 that I found in one Sunday edition of The Oregonian:
I've completed a new piece using some unique materials that I've found while gleaning at the city dump. The large photo came from my "photo motherlode" find last week. All of my work, along with the work from the other artists in this program will be at the Disjecta Gallery in September. That is when our art grant officially comes to an end...we will no longer be allowed into the Transfer Station to do more gleaning.
